Front sight adjustment for the

Vetterli M1881 Stutzer

The Vetterli M1881 Stutzer has an open sight. The sights can be used for shooting at distances between 225 meters and 1’600 meters. But shooting at 100 meters the hits at the target would be approx. 50 cm (19 inches) or so above aiming point. To drop the hits down at aiming point it is needed to modify the front sight. The height of the new front sight has to be approx. 5mm. There is a complex formula to calculate (thanks Parashooter).

I took a piece of aluminum in rectangular form for building a new front sight. The piece has a thickness of approx. 2mm. With a metallic saw I cut the form like the picture below:

Afterwards I rasp the edges and ends. The form of the front sight can be like a pyramid or a taller one. Then I tin-soldered the new front sight at the existing. This kind of front sight is robust enough. And if you would like to bring back your Vetterli in the original status it’s easy to convert it back. At the end take a black spray for metal for coloring the front sight. You can take a black waterproof marker to do this job as well.

Good shooting with your Vetterli. You will enjoy shooting the Vetterli.
