Gian Marchet Colani
A short description about this ManBorn on 19.05.1772 in La Punt Chamues-ch in the Engadin, died on 17.08.1837 in Pontresina. Reformed, of La Punt Chamues-ch. Son of January Antoni, master. First marriage on 1794 with Margarita Ambass, daughter of Johannes, tenant, of Molinis, second marriage on 1808 with Maria Branger, daughter of Andreas, Paechters, of Davos. Mechanics apprentice in France. Gun maker, farmer and restaurant operator/barkeeper in Pontresina, occasionally he worked as mountain guide. With 19 years he was already the best rifleman of the Engadins, Colani shot in the time of its life several bears and for instance 2'700 mountain chamoix (Rupicapra Rupicapra). The rumor, Colani shot other hunters in its hunting ground, is due to a romantic narration in the "Stuttgart morning papers ". 1835 together with Oswald Heer, he climbed the east summit of the Piz Palue. Colani was model for the figure of the Markus Paltram in Jakob Christoph Heer novel " the king of the Bernina " (1900).
