Hunting in Africa

The first hunting day

On Friday 5th July at seven o’clock we were waked up by the alarm clock. We really had to admit that the Namibian winter could be very cold! And several people told us that the winter could be chilly.

Frank’s original Willy Jeep was ready for the drive. He took us out in the bush. What a blast – the Ana tree’s in the dry river, the different bushes and the beautiful vegetation. I didn’t ever see so many different types of shrub. Frank our professional hunting guide always insists on the hunter’s shooting skill. It is a good possibility for the hunting guide to verify if the guest is well known in using the rifle. So I took my Blaser R93 and I prepared to fire some shots. After wearing ear protectors I shot the first shot at 100 meters on the target. The bullet hole was in the middle and 1.5 inches high. Frank said, “This could be a lucky shot…” OK – I reloaded a virgin round and fired once again. The second hit was 15 millimeters away from the first shot. “I had once a guest who has fired more than forty shots to get the rifle at the right aim point…” the professional hunter said.

After shooting I stowed the rifle in the Jeep. Frank drew the body of an African animal in the sand of the dry river. He explained me about the aiming point. But because I had read the book “The perfect Shot” form Kevin Robertson the most thinks I already knew. Afterwards Martin our tracker, Frank our hunting guide, my wife and me we drove thru the bush. And at this first morning we saw a lot of animals. Really – I didn’t expect to see so many animals.
